Science

At Orelia Primary School we have a specialist science program for students in years 1 to 6. Our science program is based on Primary Connections and focuses on the four Science Understanding strands of the Western Australian Curriculum, these being Biological Science, Physical Science, Chemical Science, and Earth and Space Science. In line with Orelia Primary School’s focus, our science program also incorporates the use explicit instruction and weekly review to meet the needs of all of our students. Students come to science for 1 session every week where they participate in both the theory and practical components of science. This enables them to develop their knowledge and understanding of science concepts, build on their inquiry and investigation skills, and to understand how science informs and impacts the world around them.

Each year Orelia Primary School celebrates National Science Week with a variety of science based events including our famous Balloon Car Challenge that aims to engage both students and families through a fun, hands-on event. The Orelia Primary School community also likes to give back to our community and we do this by participating in The City of Kwinana’s Schools Tree Planting Program. We have been involved in this program for many years and during this time, with the help of parents, Orelia Primary School students have planted thousands of trees and shrubs at Sloan’s Reserve.

We are focused on developing sustainable environmental practices within our school and community. In 2021 Orelia Primary School was recognised as the Champion Mobile Phone recyclers in Western Australia. We were also formally awarded the status of an “Adopt a Beach School” from Perth NRM for our contribution to coastal conservation. We have a great whole school recycling program here at Orelia Primary School and each year a group of students are elected to become Eco-Warriors. Their duties include looking after the recycle and scrap bins, and encouraging other students to use the correct bins.

Library

Orelia Primary School’s Library is for students and staff to have access to a variety of books and resources. These items are not only for the education, enjoyment and entertainment of all members of the school community, but also to enhance the school’s curriculum. The library plays a key role in the cultural and social life of the school. It is a central point for engagement with all kinds of reading, cultural activities, access to information, knowledge building, deep thinking and  lively discussion.

At Orelia Primary School all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have the opportunity to borrow library books to encourage a love of reading. Borrowing books from the library on a weekly basis encourages children to explore a wide range of topics, subjects and genres. It also encourages responsibility of looking after the school’s books whilst in their care and remembering to return their books every week.

Dedicated time is spent in class enabling students to navigate the library space and to be able to make personal reading choices that benefit their interests and their ability level. This is a time for the promotion of new and classic authors, as well as new titles and series. We strive to find the one book or series that grips our students imaginations,  and enables them to carry a ‘love of reading’ for leisure and information through out their whole lives.

Our library is a dynamic space that is always changing with new displays, books and furniture layout. Students are encouraged to engage with the library collection and provide feedback regarding the development of the collection in consultation with our library officer, Miss Julie.

Our mantra in the library is Read Everyday!

Our home reading program is run out of the library from 8:15am – 8:35am, Monday to Friday and all students from Years 1 – 6 are encouraged to access this program.

The Department of Education website has information on building a love of reading at home.

Physical Education

The Physical Education Program at Orelia Primary School comprises two branches, from Kindy to Year 2 the focus is on Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), these skills are consolidated in Year 3-6 where modified games are a key focus.

All classes have a one-hour lesson with their class and one hour of organised games or modified sport on a Friday.

The emphasis is on participation, having a go and trying your best. Children are encouraged to improve their own fitness and skills and take responsibility for their own physical health and wellbeing. We endeavour to instil lifelong habits, to stay fit, play sport and stay healthy.
