Science at Orelia Primary School
At Orelia Primary School, we want our students to be curious about the world around them and excited to discover how and why things happen.
Our science program gives students plenty of opportunities to wonder, explore, investigate, create and discover. Through hands-on experiments, investigations, challenges and real-world experiences, students are encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas, work together and learn through doing. Science is also a wonderful opportunity for students to build confidence, persistence and problem-solving skills. Sometimes an experiment doesn’t work the first time — and that’s all part of being a scientist!
Science in 2026
It has been another exciting year of Science at Orelia! Throughout the year, students have explored Biological, Chemical, Physical, and Earth and Space Sciences through engaging classroom activities and hands-on investigations. From making predictions and testing ideas to observing changes, designing solutions and sharing discoveries, our students have been busy developing their skills as young scientists. Wherever possible, we make Science practical, engaging and connected to things students see and experience in their everyday lives.
National Science Week 2026
National Science Week is always one of our favourite times of the year at Orelia Primary School. The 2026 theme, “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All,” provided the perfect opportunity for our whole school community to celebrate curiosity, creativity and discovery.
Students participated in different hands-on Science and STEM challenges across the school:
Kindy & Pre-Primary explored the idea of a Mini Fish Nursery.
Years 1 & 2 designed and tested their own Seed Boats.
Years 3 & 4 became engineers as they designed a Pollinator.
Years 5 & 6 took on a Seed Delivery System Challenge, designing a way to successfully deliver their seed to a target. There was plenty of designing, building, testing, problem-solving — and going back to the drawing board!
Our 2026 Science Fair
Our Science Fair was once again a fantastic celebration of our students and their learning. Students had the opportunity to develop their own ideas, investigate questions and proudly showcase their projects to their peers, teachers and families. Our home competitions also gave students and families another way to join in the fun, with Mystery Seed for Years 3–6 and Design a Super Plant for our younger students.
One of our favourite parts of the Science Fair is seeing how proud students are to share what they have created. It is also wonderful to welcome families into our school to see the incredible effort, creativity and curiosity of our young scientists.
Taking Science Beyond the Classroom
Some of the best learning happens when students can see how Science connects with the real world. During 2026, our students have had opportunities to participate in exciting Science excursions and incursions, bringing their classroom learning to life. Our Years 5 and 6 students visited the PCH Discovery Centre, where they explored real-world health and medical science through hands-on learning experiences. Our younger students also welcomed the Kids Research Institute Australia to Orelia for a very memorable Poo workshop! It was a fun and engaging way for students to learn more about their bodies, health and the science happening inside us every day. Experiences like these allow our students to meet people working in science, ask questions and discover just how many different places a love of science can take them.
Caring for Our Environment
Science also helps our students understand the important role we all play in caring for our environment. Our Eco-Warriors give students the opportunity to take an active role in making Orelia a more environmentally responsible school. Through sustainability activities and conversations about waste, recycling and caring for our natural environment, we encourage students to recognise that even small actions can make a difference.
Growing Curious Minds
Above all, we want Science at Orelia to be something our students look forward to. We want our students to feel comfortable asking questions, trying something new, making mistakes and having another go. Whether they grow up to become a scientist, engineer, teacher, tradesperson, health professional — or choose a completely different path — the curiosity, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills developed through science can stay with them for life. We look forward to continuing to wonder, explore and discover together as a school community.
